What is Perho HoloLens application?

Softability and Perho Culinary, Tourism & Business College started developing earlier last year a virtual learning environment application for Microsoft HoloLens smart glasses. The purpose of the application is to guide and instruct in different work phases utilizing mixed reality. In practice the application allows user to see with HoloLens smart glasses both the real world and the virtual holograms created in the real world (pictures, videos, 3D objects, text, etc.).

In order to function in everyday teaching, the content management and creation of the Perho HoloLens application had to be made as easy as possible. Different ways to make the content management easier were explored based on the needs of Perho. Late last year, version 1.5 of the application was released with the addition of a web-based content editing tool that works with WordPress Media Library. With this editing tool, customer can easily add text, videos, images and PDFs to the application without any coding. Customer can also change the appearance of the application and duplicate it, for example, to test it in another field of study.

The application is now available on the Microsoft Store

Perho HoloLens has been developed as part of the MR Amis – Mixed Reality project to find solutions to combine augmented reality with teaching, learning environments and work-based learning. The project has been funded by Finnish National Agency for Education.

Projects funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education aim always to share knowledge and output with other educational institutions and interested parties. Because of this, the English version of Perho HoloLens demo is now available for download from the Microsoft Store for testing by other educational institutions and businesses. Using the application requires HoloLens smart glasses.

Further development of the application from the perspective of user experiences

Perho Culinary, Tourism & Business College is continuing to develop an augmented reality learning environment in the ViSu – Virtual and Simulated Learning Environment in Vocational Training project, launched in December 2019. Perho Hololens application user experience contributes to the development of the following version. All feedback is extremely valuable and appreciated, and the developers hope that the users will provide their feedback, observations and general experience by answering the following short survey (in English).

The application development will continue in the new ViSu project (11.2019 – 12.2021).
