Softability made an AR application for Tehomet to showcase lighting poles

Hanna-Kaisa Jauhola | 2018/02/02

XR Studio has developed an augmented reality (AR) application for Tehomet to present lighting pole products virtually. The mobile application is an interactive AR product catalog that visualizes lighting poles impressively in augmented reality.

Tehomet takes advantage of augmented reality

With the mobile AR application, Tehomet’s sales team can showcase 3D optimized lighting poles for customers in different locations using augmented reality. The customer sees Tehomet’s product range with Apple mobile device through the mobile AR app (iOS). He/She can view products with technical information, and place 3D modeled lighting poles to the real environment. The application can be used both indoors and outdoors. The customer sees the light poles virtually as realistic and high-quality 3D models that are adapted to ambient lighting. The Mobile app analyzes the amount of light (detected through the camera) in the real environment and adjusts the shadows and amount of light hitting the virtual lighting poles.

Expertise and AR technologies as enablers

XR Studio team implemented the app using e.g. 3D modeling, Unity3D and Apple ARKit platforms and SLAM technology (Simultaneuous Localization and Mapping). The camera of the user’s mobile device is like an eye which sees and transmits the visual data from the real environment to the mobile app. The mobile application uses motion tracking sensors, video, SLAM algorithms to map the environment and detect the size and location of flat surfaces (like floors) around the user. SLAM technology converts the surroundings into 3D point cloud that computers understand.

When a user selects Tehemot’s lighting poles from the mobile application and places them to desired locations around him/her, the mobile AR application with SLAM remembers the location of the virtual lighting pole in the surrounding space and places and keeps each light pole in the right place even when the user moves around the place. The user can view lighting poles from different angles, scale their size, or move their position. With SLAM technology, the mobile app is aware of the location of each AR object in relation to the surrounding space and the user.

Augmented reality revolutionizes product visualization

Using augmented reality, even large products can be showcased in a realistic way in any physical surrounding. Customers no longer have to imagine how the products would look like in their real environment, but they can see and visualize how different lighting pole products look in the desired location from different angles. Since large size lighting poles can’t be taken to sales meetings or fairs, the mobile AR application enables visualization and comparison of the products in an impressive and interactive way. Tehomet’s AR mobile application makes it easy for customers to choose products. Additionally, showcasing products with augmented reality is an memorable experience for the customer.

– Cooperation with Softability has worked seamlessly, especially the response time in the development phase was really fast. The end result surpassed expectations. The AR solution brings a whole new dimension to visualization and it is a great tool for sales and design, says Sami Huuskonen, Industrial Designer of Tehomet.

– With this mobile AR application, it’s easy to imagine how this technology can go far beyond, and that’s why, we also want to go further with it. Our products are large and heavy but with this application, it is possible to showcase them anywhere. The AR application will be presented for the first time to a larger audience at the Sähkö Tele Valo AV exhibition at our booth in Jyväskylä 7.-9.2.2018, reveals Huuskonen.
